 Aleksandar P. Simić, M.D., Ph.D., is currently Full Professor of Surgery and Chief of Department of Surgery at the School of Medicine, University of Belgrade. Prof. Simić earned his medical degree at the School of Medicine, University of Belgrade, where he completed his surgical residency, and started his work as attending surgeon at the University Hospital for Digestive Surgery, University Clinical Center of Serbia (UCCS) in Belgrade. At present he is a Chief of the Department, Head of the Minimally Invasive Surgery Program and Vice-Chair at the University Hospital for Digestive Surgery, UCCS. As a recipient of the International Society for Diseases of the Esophagus Annual Scholarship Award, he resided as a fellow at the Department of Foregut Surgery, University of Southern California, Los Angeles, where he was involved in esophageal pathophysiology diagnostics and advanced minimally invasive surgery of the foregut.

Prof. Simić’s main fields of interest are foregut surgery and diseases, with special emphasis on GERD, hiatal hernias, Barrett’s esophagus, and esophageal motility disorders. He focuses on diagnostics (upper GI endoscopy, 24 impedance/pH, manometry), interventional endoscopy (dilatations, RFA for Barrett’s, Intragastric balloons) and minimally invasive surgical approach in the treatment of all foregut and especially benign disorders, with high activity in the field of surgical education. Together with his team he has introduced numerous novel minimally invasive surgical (laparo/thoracoscopic) procedures in his country and surrounding region. He is the founder and member of the board of the European Foregut Surgery and Serbian Association for Endoscopic Surgery, and also a member of the European Association of Endoscopic Surgery, Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract, International Society for Diseases of the Esophagus, World Organization for Specialized Studies on Diseases of the Esophagus. Dr Simić is an honorary member of the Hungarian Surgical Society, Austrian Society of Minimally Invasive Surgery, Brazilian College of Surgery and Brazilian College of Digestive Surgery. His work has led to many peer-reviewed publications in the leading surgical journals, several books and book chapters, as well as numerous invited lectures worldwide. He has been a President of the European Foregut Society 2nd Annual Meeting held in Belgrade in 2022, and an editor-in-chief of the international textbook entitled “Surgery for Benign Oesophageal Disorders” published by the world renowned World Scientific, and latest official textbook of the School of Medicine, University of Belgrade entitled “Surgery & Anesthesiology”.
